Kenya now has no shortage of ways to send someone money after good service. M-PESA, personal till numbers, creator links and restaurant QR codes all exist. For a hotel, lodge or safari camp, most of those tools solve the wrong problem.

A waiter collecting a personal tip is one workflow. A 40-person lodge splitting a week of guest appreciation — including people the guest never met — is another.

What do “tipping platforms in Kenya” actually mean?

Search results mix four different products. Knowing which group you are in saves a lot of comparison time.

  1. Person-to-person M-PESA tools for waiters, riders and barbers.
  2. Creator / fan links for influencers.
  3. Restaurant QR tips that pay one staff member instantly.
  4. Hospitality TipJARs that take international cards, keep tips off the room bill, and let a staff committee distribute.

Thenks is in the fourth group. If you run a salon or a food stall, a simple STK push may be enough. If you run rooms, departments and a safari vehicle fleet, you need the rest of the stack. For a plain-language definition of what a TipJAR is, start with What is a TipJAR?.

What does hospitality actually need?

Four requirements come up in every lodge conversation we have.

Guests are not all on M-PESA. International tourists arrive with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. A Kenya-only wallet excludes the people who historically tip the most.

Tips must not hit hotel revenue. Mixing card “tips” into the PMS or the same merchant account as accommodation creates tax and reconciliation noise. A dedicated TipJAR keeps guest appreciation separate.

Distribution is a team problem. Housekeeping, kitchen, guides and security do not all stand at the same till. Equal, department, hours-based or hybrid splits need a committee and an audit trail — not a manager’s spreadsheet at month end.

Payouts should land on M-PESA. That is how Kenyan hospitality teams already get paid extras. The platform’s job is to convert a euro card tip into a shilling payout without the general manager counting envelopes.

How is Thenks different in that market?

Guests scan a QR code. No app. They pay in 135+ currencies. Funds sit in the property’s TipJAR. Staff-led rules decide the split. Payouts go to mobile money. Setup is measured in minutes, not a PMS project.

That is why lodges use Thenks even when cheaper person-to-person apps exist: those apps were not designed for a camp with a staff welfare committee. For the full money-flow walkthrough, see Understanding the TipJAR.

What should you ask before choosing a platform?

If you are comparing tools, ask each vendor:

  • Can an American or German guest pay without M-PESA?
  • Are tips ring-fenced from room revenue?
  • Can a committee, not only a manager, approve a split?
  • Do individuals and whole departments both work?
  • Is there a record when a distribution is reversed?

Properties that answer “no” to most of these are built for personal tipping, not lodge-scale tip management.

Frequently asked questions

Can guests tip without M-PESA? Yes. Thenks accepts cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and M-PESA in 135+ currencies. International guests do not need a Kenyan mobile-money account.

Do tips go into hotel revenue? No. Tips enter a dedicated TipJAR, separate from the property’s accommodation accounts.

Who decides how tips are split? A staff committee — elected staff representatives — sets distribution rules. Management cannot override without committee approval.

How long does setup take? Most properties are live in about 15 minutes. See Set up Thenks in 15 minutes.

Is Thenks only for large hotels? No. Thenks works for boutique lodges with five rooms and large resorts with hundreds of staff. There are no minimum volume requirements.
